Bytedance is shutting down its music streaming service TikTok Music, originally called Resso. The offering will therefore never be marketed in the German-speaking region. It will end on November 28.

This is revealed by a message on the TikTok Music website. In India, Resso had to be shut down a few months ago due to official orders. Bytedance launched Resso in March 2020, initially in India and Indonesia, and a few months later in Brazil. This meant that the offer was available to about 30 percent of the world’s population outside China. There was a version that was free as it was funded by advertising, as well as a subscription version.
Last year, Resso was renamed TikTok Music in Indonesia and Brazil and also launched in Australia, Mexico and Singapore. But on January 31, 2024, the offer hit a double whammy: Universal Music’s license expired and India banned the Resso application from the Google and Apple app stores. India continues to ban Chinese apps that are said to threaten the country’s sovereignty. ByteDance’s more famous video streaming service TikTok has been blocked in India since 2020.
Google users get their money back automatically
TikTok now again has licenses for works from Universal Music’s catalog, but India, the world’s most populous country, will be missing from the portfolio in the long term. In addition, due to high licensing costs, it is difficult to make money from music streaming if you do not have YouTube’s market power, which could lead to ever-increasing subscription prices for YouTube Premium (including YouTube Music).
New subscriptions to TikTok Music will no longer be possible. Cancellations are possible at any time until November 28, after which the servers will shut down. Anyone who has taken out a long-term subscription through Google Play will automatically receive a refund. However, affected Apple users will have to submit one by November 28 at the latest Submit a refund request. Any playlists can only be exported until October 28th.
