Motorola is launching the Moto Tag, a tracker in Google’s Find My Device network. The gadget also supports UWB technology (Ultra-Wideband, ultra-wideband) so that it can be located even more accurately by compatible cell phones. A button on the tracker triggers an alarm on the linked smartphone.

The Moto Day will be offered from July for 40 euros. In its announcement, Motorola emphasizes the advantages of the “Find My Device” network, which has been active only in Germany since May. The Find My Device network uses end-to-end encryption with a unique key that only the user can access. So neither Google nor Motorola should have access to the data. The location of the tag can also be shared with other people, who can also see it.
Protection against water and dust
Moto Tag works with Android phones from all manufacturers. To protect against improper use, Moto Tag sends alerts to people’s phones that may be tracked without their knowledge. These alerts can be sent to iPhones in addition to Android phones.

Motorola offers its own app for its tracker, in which you can, for example, change the name of the tag and adjust the volume of notifications. The remaining battery life is also displayed in the app. According to Motorola, it is a CR2032 battery that will last up to a year and can be replaced. The Moto Tag is also protected against water and dust according to the IP67 certification. So it can survive in fresh water at a depth of one meter for up to 30 minutes, but should not be dived.

Google’s Find My Device network is its answer to Apple’s Find My features: a cross-manufacturer network for locating and tracking smartphones, headphones and trackers. It works via a Bluetooth connection that communicates with other nearby devices that have location tracking turned on – especially smartphones. Accordingly, such functions usually work better in densely populated cities than in remote areas.

An earlier version of the message said that Moto Tag also works with iPhones. In fact, it only sends tracking alerts to iPhones. We’ve corrected the location.
