The last German government bitcoin is gone

As transaction data examined by crypto analysis platform Arkham Intelligence shows, there are apparently no more bitcoins (BTC) in the suspicious “Germany wallet”. Yesterday evening, the Saxony public prosecutor’s office made the last transaction for 3846.05 BTC (currently $224 million).

Arkham Intelligence tracked bitcoin transactions and identified several wallets that matched government transactions Published data. The authorities have never officially confirmed these transactions, but neither have they denied them. As heise Online reported, the alleged operator of the illegal streaming portal Movie2k handed over the keys to several wallets containing a total of 50,000 BTC to the Federal Criminal Police Office (BKA).

The sale was processed through so-called “flow traders” as trading partners in the OTC market. OTC is the name given to trading by professional and institutional investors who do not trade on a regular stock exchange, but rather “over the counter”. The parties agree on these prices without directly affecting the prices on crypto exchanges.

In Germany, the BKA plays the role of crypto custodian for the public prosecutor’s offices of the federal states, in this case for the state of Saxony. Movie2k collected bitcoins as advertising revenue for the website between 2011 and 2013. At that time, BTC prices fluctuated between 2 and 230 euros and their value was relatively low. Due to the huge increase to currently around 53,000 euros per BTC, the estimated total value of the income is around 2.7 billion euros.

Some members of the Bundestag called on the government to place bitcoins in the state reserve and keep them as protection against inflation and the increase in their value. Nevertheless, the government decided against it and sold the state-owned German bitcoin holdings.
