Synology: NAS video streaming only without video station

New versions of DiskStation Manager (DSM) – Synology’s operating system for its own network storage (NAS) – no longer support the official Video Station apps. Synology stops developing them and refers to third-party alternatives.

Video Station was an interface for streaming movies and series, including data-saving transcoding (depending on the capabilities of the NAS processor). Client apps were available for Android, iOS and Windows, among others. This meant you could practically set up your own Netflix with your own content.

Since DSM version 7.2.2-72803 from August 26, 2024, Video Station has become history. Since then, another update has been released without the app: 7.2.2-72806. These updates can only be installed if you first uninstall the Video Station app.

in one Synology’s support post lists three alternative media server apps: Emby, Jellyfin and Plex. Synology provides official DSM installation packages for Emby and Plex; there is an installation package for Jellyfin Alternative Store Synoccommunity. Alternatively, installation via a Docker container works in all three cases. Existing movie and series libraries can be imported with all options. The article explains the procedure in German.

Users should not postpone DSM updates because of Video Station, as new versions also address security flaws. The longer you wait and skip updates, the more vulnerable the NAS becomes.

The end of support is particularly annoying for owners of older DiskStation systems for which the Synology Video Station was advertised as a core component. A member in the Synology forum quotes Manufacturer support:

“Unfortunately, Video Station is not available on DSM 7.2.2. It was originally designed 13 years ago to organize and stream locally purchased media files. With the advent of online video streaming, this method has become less common. Thank you for your understanding.”
