In an audit report, the Federal Audit Office fundamentally questions the federal government’s funding of games. In its recently published report, the auditor criticizes, among other things, the fact that development studios do not have to return funding after economic success. In addition, she sees the task of promoting games as fundamentally lying not with the federal government, but with the states.

The Federal Ministry of Economics and Transport, which is currently in charge, still has to explain why the federal government should be responsible for funding in this case. The Federal Audit Office writes in its audit report. “If funding authority is not granted, then federal funding should be stopped.”
The Federal Audit Office also doubts the actual implementation. It is not clear why development studios cannot pay the approved funds after their games are released. In 10 of the 18 game funding projects examined by the Federal Audit Office, the applicants’ assessments show that the revenue from published games should exceed the project costs after three years at the latest. If there is economic success, the funding should be paid out, the Federal Audit Office recommends.
“The goal of gaming funding has been misunderstood”
The Game Industry Association, which regularly campaigns for the expansion of gaming funding, criticizes the Federal Audit Office’s report. The audit report ignores important factors and misunderstands the purpose of games funding. “Due to the one-sided focus on the dangerous dangers of games in the 1990s and early 2000s, Germany almost completely missed the potential of games,” writes Felix Falk, Game’s managing director. “This led to a loss of international competitiveness, which still has negative effects today. We can only make up for this deficit by funding internationally competitive games.” The Federal Audit Office’s opinion ignores “global market reality”.
according to him Game Industry Industry Magazine More than 500 projects were supported by Games funding, and the federal government provides at least 50 million euros for this each year. But Games funding has been frozen for more than a year: new applications are no longer accepted because funding for future years has already been exhausted and the 2024 federal budget does not provide for any additional funding.
Independent of sports funding, the federal budget approved 100 million euros to support the German sports industry, to be distributed over three years.
