Speed measurement: Google Maps now shows km/h on iPhone

Finding a well-functioning speedometer app on the iPhone is not so easy – often the apps simply don’t work or their data protection policies are questionable at best. So users turn to crutches, such as the Google Navigation Assistant app Wazewhich has a GPS-based speed display integrated. However, you can currently search for the speed display for free in Apple’s Maps app or Google Maps itself. So far: According to a report, Google is currently in the process of rolling out this feature to users first. Both iOS and Apple’s CarPlay vehicle integration are supported.

The first movie is coming, reports IT blog TechCrunch Five full years since the introduction of the speedometer on Android. Why it took so long is not clear. The basic idea is to help iPhone users comply with the current speed limit. In addition to the actual speed, it is compared with the existing limits of the road traffic rules. Of course, Google does not guarantee that these will always be correct. The same applies to speed measurements, which can be inaccurate due to GPS problems.

For the feature to appear, Google Maps on the iPhone must be up to date. On the server side, Google is currently preparing to make it available to countries already covered — or at least to individual users. According to TechCrunch, the rollout will be done globally, and there are early reports of success from India, among others.

The function can be activated through the navigation settings. You can display the speed in kilometers per hour or miles per hour. Initially it was not clear whether Google required a forced login to use this feature – Google Maps can be used even without an account, even if Google always annoys logged out users with tips.

In addition to the actual display, you can also be warned about speeding. However, this does not apply to all regions. If the function is available, it can be turned on or off by clicking on the speedometer. On Android, the speedometer came to the Google Maps app in 2019, installed there by default. In the same year, Google introduced this function in more than 40 countries and gradually expanded it.
