SpaceX brings Starlink Mini, a portable, laptop-sized antenna for travel

SpaceX will launch a compact version of its Starlink satellite internet receiving system in a few months. The Starlink Mini is significantly smaller and lighter than the company’s standard antenna, but should still be able to achieve transfer rates of 100 Mbit/s or more. The portable Starlink antenna has an integrated WiFi router and is particularly suitable for travelers and hikers, as the Starlink Mini easily fits into a backpack due to its notebook size.

Starlink was already planning to broadcast its satellite internet to larger vehicles such as trucks, planes and ships in 2021, for example bringing Starlink internet to mobile homes. Now the Starlink Mini is a truly portable reception system. The antenna measures just 299x259x39 millimeters and is therefore only half the size of the standard Starlink antenna. At 1.1 kilograms, it weighs a little more than a third of the weight of the one already available in German technical data Cheated.

However, the WLAN router integrated into the Starlink Mini only supports WLAN 5 (802.11ac) as a wireless network standard. The Starlink standard antennas, on the other hand, offer WLAN 6 (802.11ax), which allows for higher efficiency and speed of data transmission. Nevertheless, the Starlink Mini should be capable of downloading 100 megabits per second and uploading more than 11 Mbps. At least that is what SpaceX boss Elon Musk has claimed in a posting on Twitter, formerly SpaceX. As his screenshot shows, the latency was 23 milliseconds.

According to Musk, this should enable multiple 4K streams at the same time. According to him, he set up the Starlink Mini in just five minutes and the reception system was easy to store and carry in a backpack. Starlink specifies a Wi-Fi range of 112 square meters for the small antenna, but in addition to Wi-Fi, the Starlink Mini also offers an Ethernet port.

Elon Musk also said that Starlink Mini will be available for order in select areas of the world in a few months. The mini antenna is also a good and cost-effective option as a backup for internet connection when the landline network fails. However, he did not reveal any price, but said that Starlink Mini will cost half the price of the standard antenna.

Starlink itself offers a mobile tariff of 59 euros per month with unlimited mobile data within the country. However, it is still unclear whether this tariff will also be valid for the Starlink Mini. The compact antenna is already listed, but is not yet available in this country. The outright price of the Starlink Mini is also unknown at the moment, but if Musk’s price promise is true, it could cost around 175 euros. The standard Starlinks antenna costs 349 euros in Germany.
