According to Reuters report, Sony wants to buy Japanese media company Kadokawa. In addition to magazines, films, and anime series, Kadokawa’s portfolio also includes a game development division. Their main prize: 70 percent of FromSoftware, the renowned studio behind the “Dark Souls” games and “Elden Ring.”

Sony already owns 14 percent of FromSoftware and has worked extensively with the cult studio in the past. Titles such as “Demon’s Souls” and “Bloodborn” were released exclusively for the PlayStation platform. If Sony acquires Kadokawa now, FromSoftware’s future titles may also become available exclusively on Playstation. However, Sony has recently delayed bringing its own productions to PC.

According to Reuters report A deal may be struck in the coming weeks. Neither Sony nor Kadokawa wanted to comment on the report when asked by Reuters. Before the report was published, Kadokawa shares were worth $2.7 billion, but have since gained 23 percent.
Sony has purchased several game studios in recent years to strengthen its first-party production. Sony recently purchased Bungie Studios for $3.7 billion. Meanwhile, rival Microsoft Activision has acquired Blizzard and Bethesda’s parent company Zenimax for a combined $75 billion – and has pressured Sony to do the same. Sony currently holds a 2 percent stake in Kadokawa.
Kadokawa includes other development studios that are less well known in the West. In the same year, Kadokawa purchased the Acquire company, which developed the “Way of the Samurai” series and was involved in the development of “Octopath Traveller”.
