Apple wants to update iPhones with the latest software. Software update notices are currently appearing on many devices currently running iOS 17. The message reads, “iOS 18.1.1 is available for your iPhone and ready to install.” The new operating system version is already downloaded in the background by default. Users can decide to install the upgrade immediately or later. If you tap on one of the top two options, the installation will be done. If you choose “Details” instead, you may further delay the upgrade.

Only (few) security patches for iOS 17
The first users apparently received the update reminder last week, others only this week – including an iPhone with iOS 17.7.2 from the Mac&Eye editorial team. Apple delivers iOS updates simultaneously to all supported devices worldwide, but users must be active in order to install them. Apple currently provides security updates for iOS 17, and version iOS 17.7.3 is in preparation. However, all known vulnerabilities have only been fixed in the latest iOS version, which is why upgrading to iOS 18 seems advisable – especially since the major bugs have already been fixed.
This message is currently appearing on many iPhones running iOS 17.

Switching to iOS 18 is usually painless. However, users will have to get used to the completely redesigned Photos app. It is advisable to configure it correctly for your use. Additionally, upgraders sometimes encounter an annoying bug that causes all notes to suddenly disappear from the Notes app. Fortunately, no data is lost here and the problem can be resolved relatively easily.
Apple has not yet provided any figures on the distribution of iOS 18. According to the latest data from Apple, at the beginning of June, about 80 percent of active iPhones were on iOS 17, with the rest on iOS 16 and earlier. These 20 percent iPhones are probably from older model series that do not support iOS 17 and iOS 18.
iOS 18.2: Upcoming release will bring these functions
Apple is currently preparing the next major update: iOS 18.2 has been tested by developers since Thursday evening, which is expected to be the last initial version. General release is expected next week.
Innovation is dominated by Apple Intelligence’s AI functions, followed by the recently announced ChatGPT integration, as well as image and emoji generation (Image Playground and Genmoji). iPhone 16 owners also get new functions for the camera button and Apple is adding automatic classification to Mail (in English only). Additionally, standard apps can be set centrally in Settings. In Germany, Apple Intelligence is only available in a roundabout way; Apple AI won’t officially arrive in the EU until April. System updates also bring many small, useful functions.
