Summer is about to end – despite the still high temperatures in Germany – and with it comes Apple’s most important event of the year: the launch of the new iPhones. In 2024 this time will come next Monday, September 9. At 7 p.m. Central European Time, Apple will, as usual, make a video and present the new products – selected journalists, analysts and influencers will be on site in Cupertino to be able to take a look at the hardware immediately afterwards. Here is an overview of the devices the rumor mill believes in – including a few surprises.

iPhone: four pieces, slightly bigger, no revolution
Four new models are expected for the iPhone 16, and there will likely be a standard model, a larger Plus model, a Pro, and a Pro Max in 2024. While the form factor of the standard models will probably change little – with the exception of the cameras, which are probably arranged in parallel for spatial video – the two Pro models will have slightly larger screens with smaller screen bezels. All four devices – or just the Pro models – get an action button for quick camera operations and a new “capture” button. It’s believed to be capacitive, so it could sense different levels of pressure or even swipe gestures for zoom.
When it comes to the Pro’s cameras, Apple is likely switching to a total of three 48-megapixel sensors. A 5x zoom is also available for the regular Pro. The Pro Max may get a “super telephoto” zoom with more optical zoom power. All four new iPhones get Apple’s new A18 chip for enhanced Apple intelligence. The Pro models with “A18 Pro” likely have more cores (CPU, GPU) and possibly more RAM. When it comes to storage, the Pro models may eventually offer 2 TB, but it will definitely be expensive. All iPhone 16 Pro models come with USB-C like the iPhone 15. Apple is said to have improved the battery architecture that makes replacement easier and enables more capacity. New colors can be expected on all models, Wi-Fi 7 may come to the Pro models.

Series 10 and Ultra 3 are expected for the Apple Watch. The Series 10 could match the Ultra’s screen size while retaining its form factor. It’s unclear if this is a special anniversary model. Rumor mongers expect the sensors to include blood pressure, among other things – but the latter will probably only detect deviations, not exact measurement data. Little has been revealed about the Ultra 3, but it may get a new titanium color. The new Apple Watch SE is believed to be made of plastic and should therefore stand up better to the competition.
As for the AirPods, the AirPods 4 are expected, which could replace the AirPods 2 and 3. Two models are conceivable, possibly one of them called the SE. One variant is said to have active noise cancellation (ANC) for the first time outside the Pro series. There is also some hope for the AirPods Max 2, but that could take longer. Finally, there could also be an iPad surprise: a new Mini could finally arrive.
