Meta is splitting its metaverse division, Reality Labs, into two areas: Reality Labs will become a wearables group and a metaverse group, reports technology magazine The Verge. As part of the restructuring, jobs will also be eliminated.

The Verge writes“A relatively small number of positions” are now to be eliminated. However, in the past two years, Meta has already laid off more than 20,000 employees, including in Germany.
The new structure should enable Meta to simplify product development across software and hardware, The Verge quoted an internal letter from the company as saying. This is especially important as VR headsets in the Quest series have now entered the mainstream. Now is the time to expand the software platform.
Specifically, the Metaverse group should look after the Quest glasses, while the wearables department should be responsible for the company’s other hardware products — including Meta and Ray-Ban’s smartglasses, which, according to the internal letter, are more successful than Hope. Meta declined to comment on the report.
Billion Grab Reality Labs
Metas Reality Labs is known as a billion dollar grave. In the first quarter of 2024 alone, Reality Labs lost more than $3.8 billion. Overall, Reality Labs, which celebrated its tenth anniversary in April, has lost more than $50 billion.

Recently, Meta opened its Quest operating system Meta Horizon OS to independent manufacturers. This should give consumers more choice and provide developers with a larger ecosystem, Meta wrote about the announcement. “We’re working with the world’s leading technology companies to bring this new ecosystem to life and make it even easier for developers to build apps and reach their audiences on the platform.”
