Rejection of generative AI: professional painting app Procreate “never” wants to integrate AI

The provider of the painting tool Procreate has rejected generative AI in general and is simultaneously promoting the major industry trend. Procreate says that creativity is “made and not generated”, and accordingly AI functions should “never” be integrated into the app. Parallel to the anti-AI promise, the head of the development team sharply criticized the technology: “I hate generative AI, what is happening in the industry and what it does to artists,” the CEO of Procreate stressed in a video message.

Procreate website notesthat generative AI is based on “theft” and poses a threat to human creativity. At the same time, the provider makes a clear distinction between “generative AI” and machine learning; the developers point out that the latter is a useful and “impactful technology”. In response to users’ related questions about whether works created with Procreate are used to train AI, the provider also stated that it does not have access to this material.

On social media, the anti-AI tone has already received support from users as well as other developers. For example, while Adobe’s other professional tools are already relying on AI functions at full speed, it seems that there is more and more resistance to the technology among artists – including the unsolicited training of AI models with their own tasks.

Apple also recently found itself caught in the crosshairs of this debate: after heavy criticism, the company withdrew an ad in which a scrap press crushed analog tools until only a thin iPad remained. The manufacturer had previously presented the latest iPad Pro as the ideal device for AI. Procreate was also on stage; the app is currently only available for Apple devices. With Apple Intelligence, generative AI will soon be available directly in iOS and macOS.
