Project Digit: Nvidia shrunk the DGX AI system into a mini PC

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang used his keynote to not only announce the GeForce RTX 5000 family (more on this in a separate message later) and about how AI will change the world of automation, robotics, and cars. Not only announced our vision, but also announced the future. Hardware products for the near future. Although the product will be available in May for $3,000, it doesn’t have an official name yet: Huang announced it as Project Digits.

It is a workstation in mini PC format for AI tasks. In terms of computing power, it should be in no way inferior to previous DGX systems, which had to be plugged into server cabinets in data centers: Nvidia promises that AI models with up to 200 billion parameters will run on it. And if that’s not enough, two copies can be connected via ConnectX – for twice the larger models.

The heart of Project Digits is a SoC called GB10, which combines a Blackwell generation GPU with 20 ARM cores (Grace). There is also 128 GB of LPDDR5 RAM on the motherboard. Nvidia doesn’t provide any information about bandwidth, but we assume that, like Apple’s M4 Pro or AMD’s newly introduced Ryzen AI Max, the memory interface will definitely exceed 128 bits. Mass storage is an SSD up to 4 TB (as images are rendered in M.2-2242 format) and the operating system is Linux-based DGX OS.

What’s notable about the GB10: Huang clearly emphasized during the presentation that MediaTek has worked on the development of the SoC. The CEOs of both the companies had showcased their strong male friendship on the Computex stage just about six months ago. Both companies are said to have ambitions to enter the growing Windows on ARM ecosystem. It currently only has Qualcomm’s Snapdragon

You don’t need much imagination to imagine the GB10 in a gaming-ready notebook or mini PC. It also fits that Nvidia always introduces new chip generations in high-performance versions with larger price tags, while more mass-market versions for gamers have to wait several months.
