Product workers: AI as a wingman for product owners

This time Product Activists are devoting themselves to the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) and highlighting how it can change the role of the Product Owner. Tim Klein and Oliver Winter discuss the opportunities and challenges arising from the use of AI tools in product management and ask themselves how well AI can serve as a wingman for Product Owners.

Artificial intelligence is more than just a buzzword. It offers product owners the opportunity to revolutionize the way they work. It not only helps optimize processes, but also helps fundamentally change the way product development is done. AI is much more than just ChatGPT, even though AI is often equated with applications like ChatGPT. Special technologies like machine learning, generative AI and large language models (LLMs) are just a few examples of the range of possibilities. Tim Klein explains why it is important to look beyond ChatGPT and explore other AI applications that can be useful in product management.

The talk discussed several examples of the use of AI in product management:

  • Stakeholder communication: AI can support the creation of release notes and enrich storytelling by generating images and videos.
  • Product Strategy and Approach: AI tools make it easier to create complex documents like the Amazon Six-Pager by overcoming the initial hurdle of the blank page.
  • Competitive analysis: AI can help evaluate user reviews from competitors to discover distinct advantages or new feature ideas.
  • Data analysis: With AI, vast amounts of data can be efficiently analyzed to gain valuable insights, for example by evaluating audience statistics.

The key point Tim Klein highlights is the need to use AI in dialogue. It is not enough to simply write nice prompts for generative AI. Rather, AI should be treated like an employee who needs context and clear instructions. As a wingman, AI needs this information just like other humans. This means AI tools can be used more effectively and provide valuable support.

Data protection and ethical considerations must be taken into account when using AI tools. Product owners should actively work to obtain permission to use AI tools in the company, but always adhere to data protection frameworks.

Finally, past experience shows that AI tools can enrich the work of product owners. It is about seeing AI as a helpful assistant that helps make tasks more efficient without replacing the human role.

Product activists also recommend the episode “How no-code tools can help product teams”. The episode “What makes a good sprint review?” had some useful tips on using AI in sprint reviews. Tim Klein already conducted an “interview” with ChatGPT about the role of the product owner in January 2023 – the episode was called “What does artificial intelligence know about product development?”

But Agile Scaling Day on September 11 Participants can expect a one-day online conference on scaling agile methods. After the conference, the goal is to launch an initial scaling initiative or optimize an existing one with a deeper understanding of agile scaling, i.e. to implement effective and sustainable improvements company-wide. Tickets are available through the conference website,
