Presentation: Fast Minis with “John Cooper Works” label

The “John Cooper Works” label has been present on Minis for a long time. It is used to produce models that are intended to look particularly sporty. In the three-door and regular versions of the Aceman, the most expensive equipment lines are marked, now sold as “Trim”. There are now “John Cooper Works” variants for small cars and mini SUVs that go beyond just the looks.

An essential component is an electric motor, whose output on the 190 is 30 kW more than the previous top versions. The three-door and Aceman are limited to only 200 km/h and are therefore different from the 160 kW models, which are only allowed to accelerate to 170 km/h. This is not a technical decision, but a political decision, because when it comes to acceleration, the variants are not worlds apart. Somehow a demarcation must be made to properly establish the “John Cooper Works” model.

Until now there was only the “John Cooper Works Trim” equipment line for the new Mini. Now comes our own model with this name. (Picture:

This should also be done through small interventions in the design. It includes aerodynamically optimized rims in a design that only these models get. Slight changes have also been made in the rear spoiler. Inside, sports seats and ambient lighting for the sky should set the top model apart. The storage device remains unchanged. The total capacity of the battery is 49.2 kWh, which should be enough for up to 371 km in the three-door car and a maximum of 355 km in the Aceman under WLTP conditions. It can be charged with an alternating current of up to 11 kW with a maximum direct current of 95 kW. In this regard, Mini cannot even record top prices in this segment.

In the first press release, the new models are listed at 39,700 euros (three-door) and 42,200 euros (Aceman). If you compare these prices to the 160 kW versions of the John Cooper Works trim in the configurator, there is an almost ridiculous surcharge for the 190 kW versions. The solution to the puzzle probably lies in the description. At the moment, the equipment series is only available with the “M package”, the two models presented now are also available without it. Adjusted for equipment, the additional price is around 4,000 euros. Of course, you can also look at things differently: the customer has the choice whether they want an even better equipped model with 160 kW or, at about the same price, a model with 190 kW. With Mini you will be rest assured about this. Ultimately, the most important thing for those responsible is that the customer signs with Mini – not with the competition.
