With a dedicated hardware button, Apple has finally turned the iPhone into a camera. At the same time, the iPhone 16 series finally gives more control over the final photo result – even beyond RAW shots. The new photographic styles can not only be changed afterward, but also bring back shadows and highlights in seemingly flat iPhone photos if desired. The next big revolution in smartphone photography is also imminent: AI tools that make image manipulation accessible to the masses are lurking on the horizon.

In episode 83, Malte Kirchner and Leo Becker devote themselves entirely to the topic of smartphone photography and in particular to the surprisingly far-reaching innovations in the iPhone 16 series. Apart from the camera system, we mainly discuss the new, ultra-ambitious hardware buttons as well as the photographic styles: they bring a flexibility that iPhone photographers haven’t previously had outside of RAW development. However, at the same time, they create confusion and increase the complexity considerably. We are also concerned with the topic of AI, which brings mass-market possibilities for simple and surprisingly real-looking image manipulation – as is already possible with Google’s Pixel series today.
