Anyone who buys Apple accessories is often buying surprisingly outdated stuff. This is especially true for audio and display products. With these, users should consider how wise it is to buy them – even though it’s impossible to say when Apple will update them. Some hardware still has older connections, and some is outdated in terms of price. Four examples from the recent past.

AirPods Max: Waiting for USB-C
Apple launched the AirPods Max to the market in December 2020. After almost four years, they are still selling surprisingly well – as the only over-ear headphones of the group – but users have to deal with outdated ANC technology, a missing H2 chip for new functions such as adaptive audio, and a Lightning port instead of USB. C Live. There is currently speculation that Apple could introduce a second Max model this year that meets at least some of these wishes. Unfortunately, the rumor market has been surprisingly silent on the subject for several months.
HomePod mini: In at least one new color
Apple has been selling the HomePod Mini since November 2020. The device really offers everything you would expect from a small smart speaker – but nothing more. For example, Apple could tweak the sound and re-fit Apple Intelligence in the future. Recently, the Mini, which costs around 100 euros depending on the color version, was given a new coat of paint called “Midnight” to match the HomePod 2. The hardware remained the same.
AirPods 3: Lightning and awkward shape
Unlike the two other audio products described here, the AirPods 3 are absolutely young: they were released in October 2021. Of course, the charging case only comes with Lightning, although there is personal 3D audio, there is no active noise cancellation; aka ANC). At least the plugs remain protected from sweat and dust. However, you shouldn’t buy them anymore, as two modern variants called AirPods 4 are due to arrive on September 9, one of which should have ANC.
Pro Display XDR: Expensive and outdated
The Pro Display XDR is in many ways a real luxury product. When it hit the market five years ago in December 2019, the 32-inch 6K screen was a minor sensation: thanks to integrated mini-LED technology, HDR and excellent color coordination, professionals were delighted. But not anymore, because the underlying technology could have overtaken Apple long ago. Instead, the screen continues to be sold by the manufacturer for at least 5,499 euros – of course without the “Pro Stand”, for which another 1,099 euros are due. There have been no rumors about a new version of the Pro Display XDR for a long time.
Conclusion: Apple, please take action
In fact Apple should take action on all four products mentioned here as soon as possible, but it has set itself up to continue selling scrap iron. For at least two of the products – AirPods 3 and AirPods Max – there are at least rumours that they could be replaced by new variants this year.
