Apple’s upcoming “tabletop robot” iPhone could be the company’s “next big thing”. Well-known American Apple journalist Mark Gurman has now looked into the inspiration behind the idea in his weekend newsletter. In his opinion, the device is primarily about “A series of First World problems It is about comfortable difficulties that do not bother users too much, but whose solution will make their everyday life easier.

Rotatable iPads with cameras
The idea is a sort of large iPad screen with cameras mounted on a stand that rotates with a motor. Initially the hardware should simply stand on a table. Later versions could become mobile and even “humanoid” (in the next decade), Gurman writes. One of the problems Apple wants to solve with the first version is missing a computer nearby.
It will then be replaced by a robotic iPad, which can also rotate in the right direction. The same applies when taking videos, photos or video conferences: if your hand is not free, just rotate the device to the right height. Ultimately, the “tabletop robot” should also serve for security purposes and could be used as a rotating camera when you are at work or traveling.

Apple’s old concept now with a robot
These ideas are not really new. There were already roving communication devices and Amazon still has a mobile robot, Astro, in its range, which can also be sent on patrol. Neither roving communication devices nor mobile robots have proven to be hit products so far. But these are exactly the areas in which Apple would like to succeed:
The company waits to see how competitors’ products are received and then makes better versions. This was already the case with MP3 players, smartphones and tablets – and eventually also with the Mac, which, with its innovative user interface, attracted even beginners to computers. Gurman believes that Apple can use its AI capabilities as well as new types of sensors and AR mapping of rooms. Apple also has a team that has been working on autonomous vehicles for a long time.
