Mysterious drones over US military bases have people guessing

For more than a year, unidentified drones have been spotted over military bases and other particularly heavily guarded US installations, posing a puzzle to the US government. This is reported by the Wall Street Journal and quoting an American fighter pilot, according to whom the individual planes are six meters long and can reach speeds of more than 160 km/h at an altitude of more than 1000 meters . These were seen at Langley Air Force Base in the US state of Virginia in December last year. The flying devices one after the other would have looked like a “parade of lawnmowers.”

According to newspaper report The US government is largely in the dark when it comes to finding those responsible. Complex flying maneuvers were observed that would not be suitable for amateur pilots. Two fixed-wing drones have repeatedly flown next to each other at high altitudes, with smaller quadcopters also flying below. In some cases they remained in their posts for some time also. Various attempts, with the help of local police, to at least secure the equipment after landing have failed.

After the drones appeared at the military base, the program even ended up on the US President’s desk. Before the drones in Virginia, some drones were discovered in the US state of Nevada at a facility where nuclear weapons experiments were taking place. Despite the aircraft’s sometimes highly sensitive targets, there was clearly no way to defend against drones. This would have been more difficult due to the comparatively small size of the instruments; In some cases they did not even appear on radar. Various defensive measures were therefore rejected because there was no legal authority to do so or the dangers to the public were considered too great.

In this context, the American newspaper also mentions the case of a 26-year-old Chinese student whose drone crashed in Virginia in early January. When the young man fled to California, his plane fell into the hands of investigators, who found photographs of American military ships lying in the dock. When the student tried to go to China without a return ticket, he was arrested. He unsuccessfully claimed in court that he took the photographs posing as a boat lover. No connection with the Chinese government was found.

Apparently no connection was found between the student and the drone sighting. In the meantime, they haven’t stopped anyway; Over the past few months, such unidentified aircraft have been sighted at another Air Force base in California. These incidents are not only reminiscent of the Chinese spy balloon that excited the US about two years ago. In early 2020, mysterious drones were seen flying at night over the sparsely populated central part of the United States.
