More security and flexibility with open source in automobile manufacturing

A new report from the Eclipse Foundation examines the benefits of open source software in automotive manufacturing. The report “Driving innovation and building safer cars with open source software” presents key trends and shows how open source accelerates the development of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).

98 percent of the 300 decision makers and software experts surveyed see significant value in open-source software for their work. Even though this does not provide concrete information about distribution in their projects, it clearly indicates the growing importance of open source in SDV.

The model is particularly valued as an innovation driver: the majority of those surveyed expect innovation to increase by more than 10 percent, while a fifth even expect an increase of up to 30 percent. In addition, open source contributes significantly to cost reduction and operational efficiency – many companies report or expect lower operating costs.

95 percent of experts also see advantages in terms of flexibility and scalability and expect that when companies use open source software they can react more quickly to new opportunities, reduce costs, shorten time to market and secure a competitive advantage.

According to the report, developers and decision-makers evaluate the advantages of open source differently. While 31 percent of decision-makers see improved performance as the most important benefit, developers prioritize ease of use (29 percent) and the ability to use common platforms such as Software Defined Vehicles (21 percent). Both groups agree that they benefit from a higher level of security and increased customizability (up by 27 percent of those surveyed) with open-source software.

“Driving innovation and building safer cars with open source software” is the first of three reports from the Eclipse Foundation that draw on the results of a major survey from the first quarter of 2024. Two more reports will be released later that focus on the business benefits and challenges of open source software in the automotive industry.
