Mini gaming PC Minisforum Atoman G7 Pt in the test: Ryzen 9 and Radeon graphics cards

It’s not really a mini PC anymore, but what else is there? The Atoman G7 PT from Minisforum breaks the well-known categories. This case is all about gaming, it’s much larger than a classic mini PC, but smaller than a tower PC. Thanks to a dedicated AMD graphics card, it also offers plenty of performance. It continues to rely on AMD’s top CPU Ryzen 7945HX paired with 32 GB main memory (RAM) and 1 TB SSD storage. We tested what else is in the box of this mini gaming PC.

The Minisforum Atomman G7 PT is for anyone who wants a gaming PC that takes up less space and doesn’t heat up too much. Thanks to the mobile CPU, it consumes more power in normal everyday office life than a gaming PC in the same scenario. Compact, powerful and stylish hardware is currently available 1359 Euros,

AMD’s seventh-generation mobile premium CPU is working at the Minisforum Atman G7 Pt: the Ryzen 9 7945HX with 16 cores and 32 threads. It can be identified mainly by the last two letters of the name, which denote the top model, while the HS models known from previous mini PCs are one level below. Even these are still faster than the U versions, which are designed to be more efficient. Apart from the clock speed, the difference lies mainly in the TDP (thermal design power), which is used to its full potential with HX. Ryzen 9 in the HX version can draw up to 75 watts of power. In boost mode the chip clocks at a maximum of 5.4 GHz.

The main difference from other mini PCs is the graphics. In addition to the integrated Radeon 610M, a dedicated graphics card is used here: the Radeon RX 7600M XT with RDNA 3 architecture. It runs at 2330 MHz and has 8 GB of GDDR6 VRAM. This is impressive considering the density that is still present; but more on that in the area Display,

In addition to these promising features, the mini gaming PC also has 32 GB of DDR5-5200 RAM, which can be upgraded to 64 GB. The SODIMM modules used come from Kingston. Kingston’s 1TB M.2 2280 SSD is also replaceable; the connection also supports PCIe 5.0. In the CrystalDiskMark test it writes at 3919 MB/s and reads at 4795 MB/s; this is the average speed, but we also have models that are almost twice as fast. There is also an additional M.2 2280 slot for an additional PCIe 4.0 SSD.

The Minisforum uses the best of the best when it comes to connections: HDMI 2.1, DisplayPort 2.0. This means that significantly higher refresh rates or 8K resolution are possible – provided the output device supports it. Unfortunately, the two USB-C ports do not come with USB 4.0, but “only” with USB 3.2 Gen 2. In addition, only the rear USB-C port supports image output via the DP protocol. The housing also has a microphone, 3.5 mm jack sockets for microphone and headphone/speaker as well as a button for CMOS reset. You can also change the fan/display mode using a button on the front.

To take into account the system’s appetite for power, a real power supply unit is included. The fact that not USB-C but a different connection is used makes sense given the high performance.

In addition to the single 2.5Gb Ethernet port with Wi-Fi 7, there is also the latest interface version for internet connection – if your router supports it. Benefits include a more stable, more extensive and faster internet connection. Bluetooth is also available in the latest version 5.4 for accessories.

We rubbed our hands and looked forward to a practical test of this data sheet. The Atomman G7 PT can also meet the expected peak values. There are record numbers in the mini PC environment. PCMark ended with an average of 9160 points, 3DMark Time Spy scored 11,267 points and wrote “Legendary” as an evaluation below it. The CPU points are 12,438 points, the graphics points of the dedicated AMD graphics are 11,084 points.

Let’s compare it to a real gaming PC: Our personal system works with an AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D, 32 GB of RAM and an Nvidia Geforce RTX 3070 Ti with Aio water cooling. It scored a total of 13,261 points, which is mainly due to the (expected) strong graphics result of 14,492 points. However, the CPU is below the result of the Atomman G7 PT with 8954 points. Overall, this shows: Despite the compact housing, the mini PC can hold up quite well.

Now let’s get to the crucial testing area for a mini gaming PC: games. counter attack Runs in Full HD on ultra-high settings at 150 to 170 frames per second (fps). Slightly more demanding Anno 1800 Even ultra-high settings with a large game world yields around 130 FPS. Once again more demanding, yet poorly optimized cities skylines 2 Flickers on the screen at 50 to 70 fps on high settings. Overall, a result worthy of a gaming PC.

Power consumption is similar to that of a gaming PC. If we play, the consumption rises to over 270 watts (measured using the AC adapter plug). However, when idle, the consumption of 20 to 40 watts is significantly lower than our gaming PC – which still consumes 120 to 150 watts. In this regard, the Atomman G7 PT clearly has an advantage here and proves to be versatile.

The pre-installed Windows 11 Pro does not require a Microsoft account when setting up, but instead provides a local user account right from the start. There is no bloatware through the standard pre-installed software. Our virus test found no abnormalities.

As a gaming mini PC, the Minisforum Atomman G7 PT produces a lot of waste heat that needs to be removed accordingly. The manufacturer is firing on all cylinders and has given the computer four fans. This means that the individual fans don’t need to be spun up that high, even though volumes of up to 45 dB under load (on the case) and 32 dB at idle (on the case) are more than acceptable considering the performance.

There are no annoying noises, the fans produce a consistent sound and work very efficiently. We measured a maximum of 57 degrees Celsius at the fan output. A button on the front also limits or increases the fan speed. This allows the system to maintain its performance for longer. Stress testing under Prime95 with evaluation via HWMonitor shows that the computer can generally maintain a high clock speed of at least 3.5 GHz. However, at higher speeds, more cores frequently switch to higher clock speeds. Overall, a well-sized cooling system for the performance spectrum.

With dimensions of 269 × 64 × 155 mm, the case of the Atomman G7 PT is noticeably larger than a classic mini PC but still very compact compared to the tower cases of gaming PCs. The solidly built housing is made of plastic, the metal fan grill on the left resembles a spider web.

The lighting on the right side cannot be controlled, but can only be turned on or off. The design is created by anime artists. However, at first glance, we can’t do much with the Asaku Uekasa lettering – but that’s a matter of taste. Overall, the mini PC offers a typical gaming look. This side panel can also be removed thanks to the magnetic attachment and in addition to the LED panel, two screws are also visible on the upper inner edge. If you loosen them, you can easily remove the panels – they are simply mounted on the bottom. You then have access to the fan, RAM and SSD slot, which are located under a large cooler. The M.2-2230 WLAN card is also accessible. Overall, very pleasantly easy maintenance.

In addition to the huge power supply mentioned above, the scope of delivery also includes a magnetic stand. This means you can also place the PC upright. Minisforum thought of a cutout for the power cable. Given the dimensions and very heavy weight of just under 3 kg, there is no VESA mount. It would be virtually impossible to display it on a monitor.

The Atoman G7 PT is normally priced at 1700 euros at Minisforum. You can get it there right now 1359 Euros. Price is for barebone version, i.e. without RAM, SSD and Windows 1139 Euros,

The Minisforum Atman G7 PT is truly exceptional in its features and size, so there is little direct comparison. Alternatively, you can use cheaper, less equipped mini PCs – which can still handle games in Full HD thanks to the powerful Radeon 780M iGPU.

It is related to Intel Base Minisforum Atoman X7 Ti (test report) on top models; it currently costs 959 euros. However, the Intel Ultra 9 used is still not well optimized for games. The computer comes with features such as an integrated webcam or fingerprint sensor.

The Atomman G7 Pt is another mini PC from Minisforum that convinces us. We are already accustomed to good cooling and high-quality workmanship from the manufacturer. The new high-end Atomman series now features the absolute top hardware of mobile chips in a compact housing. The G7 Pt is a complete breakout from the classic mini PC range. Not only because of its size, but especially because of the dedicated graphics card. This makes it an absolute gaming beast, while also maintaining a tolerable volume. Easy access to the inside of the case via the right side panel is also great.

The only downside is its high price of over 1,400 euros. Overall, an absolute top computer in a still fairly compact form factor.
