“Forza Horizon 4” will no longer be sold next year: The racing game will be removed from Steam and the Microsoft Store on December 15, 2024, developer Playground Games announced. The racing game can then no longer be played on PC or Xbox. “Forza Horizon 4” will also be removed from the Game Pass game subscription. The DLC is already being removed from stores.

Good news: “Forza Horizon 4”, released in 2018, remains playable and will not be removed from owners’ libraries, promises Microsoft studio Playground Games blog entry. The only option is to buy the game and its DLC again.

According to Microsoft, the background is “licenses and agreements with our partners.” For example, in the past, this could affect pieces of music – such as in the shooter “Spec Ops: The Line”. However, in the case of “Forza Horizon 4”, there is a suspicion that some car licenses are expiring. Playground Games does not discuss this in more detail.
Not an isolated case
Microsoft’s approach isn’t particularly unusual: EA also removed its predecessor “FIFA 23” from stores following the release of “EA FC 24.” With “Forza Horizon 5,” Playground Games offers a direct successor, and there’s also another current series spin-off, “Forza Motorsport.”
Another racing game suffered a very bad result: on April 1, Ubisoft removed the MMO racer “The Crew” and shut down the servers. This made the game unplayable. Ubisoft’s approach not only drew criticism of the French publisher from politicians, but also sparked a campaign “Stop killing games” Come on. The initiative is led by YouTuber Ross Scott and aims to inform authorities about the behavior of game publishers so they can initiate legal action.
