Telekom is compensating customers who stayed put due to the European Championship game between Turkey and Austria, which was shown exclusively on Magenta TV. Telekom announced this on Friday. Anyone who wants a refund for the subscription fee for the first month should apply for a refund from Monday on the website set up for this purpose. Telekom has not yet provided a link; customers will be informed from Monday on telekom.de. No refunds are planned for customers who booked on other dates. Telekom told Heise Online that ultimately there were no problems with the Magenta TV stream. There were no complaints.

The Euro 2024 round of 16 match between Turkey and Austria on Tuesday evening was actually supposed to be shown exclusively on Magenta TV. However, the overwhelming interest in it overloaded the IPTV service’s booking system, leading to thousands of people lining up in a digital queue. Shortly before the game started, 22,000 people were waiting to book Magenta TV and in the meantime the number had risen to 110,000.

As a replacement, Telekom made a stream available on YouTube for those waiting before kick-off. As the link quickly circulated on social media, many who were not in the Telekom queue also watched it. By the end of the game, which Turkey won 2-1, more than 500,000 people had watched the YouTube stream. However, the stream offered poorer quality than the Magenta TV stream.

The queue was formed before the booking, so the people in the queue had not yet subscribed. The refund offer is for those customers who were in the queue on July 2 but still completed their subscription later.
