Made by human hands: photos from week 26

Whether it’s a building, a bridge or a floodlight system – they all consist of many small and large individual parts that together form a finished structure or part of it. All of this was designed and built by people. Our gallery photographers interestingly stage architecture and its fragments and bring us closer to both the everyday and the special.

Bridge

This section of a Bridge Thanks to the Polaroid frame, Metapics looks like a snapshot from days gone by. The white pillar and the cables and struts extending from it stand out against a blue background. The structure looks more like a harp. A slight decrease in the brightness of the background adds some variety to the composition.

Door

Door This was a snapshot by Stephan Brill, as he wrote to us. The light diffused by the curtains and the contrast of the house lights make the scene seem like something out of a horror movie. The renovation and the slightly worn door handle also contribute to this atmosphere.

“As a member of the local photography club, I set myself the task of taking interesting architectural photos in the small town this year. This is how this photo of the facade of the school center was taken. I was particularly attracted by the high contrast of the rounded roof line and the contrasting horizontal lines of that porthole,” Hansjörg Egger (Bowtie) wrote to us about his photo School And that also explains the reasons why we chose his photo.

WALL:E

(Image: Joachim Kiener)

Recording WALL:E Made by Joachim Kiener on a visit to northern England, Wales and the Isle of Man in late April 2024.

“It shows the onboard and searchlights of a ferry sailing between Heysham (England) and Douglas (Isle of Man). The two headlights, with their circular, glowing ‘eyes’, immediately reminded me of the heroes of the film ‘Numbers. 5 Lives’ and ‘Wall:E’. ‘Numbers 5 Lives’ is reminiscent of ‘Numbers. 5 Lives’. “For the first 40 minutes, there is almost no language,” he explains about his intention behind the photo.

“Dancing Towers”, Hamburg

“Dancing Towers”, Hamburg HarryRS combines interesting architecture with the photographer’s good image idea. “Two tall buildings with surprisingly curved facades made of glass and steel are a striking motif at the beginning of the Reeperbahn – ideal for photographing from different angles. Every time I passed by, I felt compelled to take a few shots from different angles. And this photo is an either-or result,” he wrote to us.

ready for take off

(Image: Martin_NitraEM)

The building in the picture ready for take off By Martin Schwartz (Martin_nitraM) At first glance it resembles the mouth of a shark or a whale. You can see the opera and culture house “Palau de les Arts Reina Sofia” in Valencia, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava. With its white façade and curved lines, it is somewhat reminiscent of the famous Sydney Opera House. Symmetry is another factor that draws attention to the composition.

“When I visited in April, I finally had the time and my camera to go on a photo tour. The Palau de les Arts is a great motif. I chose the title “Ready for Take-off” because the building fascinated me” From this perspective, with its tip and wing, it reminds me of an airplane or spaceship. The perspective, symmetry and B/W are intended to make the building appear abstract and therefore interesting, so as not to show “just” a building. He explains about its construction.

subway entrance

(Image: Wolfgang Görgen)

The contrast between light and dark is the most striking feature of the photo subway entrance By Wolfgang Görgen. Cyclists and cars symbolize the bustle of the city on the surface while people go underground, where there is neither daylight nor fresh air. Two worlds that exist side by side and yet merge only at these entrances.
