Paradox has laid off all 24 employees of “Life by You” development studio Tectonic. Paradox made the announcement after announcing that “Life by You” would not be developed further. The studio has been working on the planned “Sims” competitor since 2019.

One of the 24 developers was Willem Delventhal, who wrote extensively about LinkedIn Posts expressed their displeasure. Accordingly, “Life by You” exceeded internally set performance metrics, receiving positive feedback from Tectonic a few weeks before release, but was surprisingly shut down by Paradox Interactive two weeks before release.

Paradox did not give any reason, Delventhal writes. “Instead we spent a month in a torture chamber.” Tectonic was looking for ways to further develop the game. They looked around for buyers and considered the possibility of going independent. Paradox responded with “hardly anything” to this. The Swedish publisher has not yet commented on Delventhal’s statements.
“Life By You” will never be released
Publicly, Paradox speaks of a difficult decision. Despite the release being postponed several times, the game hasn’t made much progress, Paradox manager Mattias Lilja wrote in a forum post. “As we looked at the game from a broader perspective, we realized that the road to release was too long and uncertain,” Lilja wrote.
“This is obviously difficult and disappointing for everyone who has put their time and enthusiasm into this project, especially when our decision comes so late.” To develop “Life by You,” Paradox enlisted former “The Sims” developer Rod Humble. Humble also served as CEO of Second Life developer Linden Lab.
