“Life by You” discontinued: “The Sims” remains without competition

The planned “Sims” competitor “Life By You” is not fully developed, Swedish publisher Paradox Interactive announced Monday evening. Despite several postponements, development has not progressed much, Paradox manager Mattias Lilja wrote in a forum entry.

“Life by You” was supposed to appear in early access recently and thus become playable to the public. But Paradox postponed the release again. Now it’s clear: the “Sims” competitor will never be published. “As we looked at the game from a broader perspective, we realized that the road to release was too long and uncertain,” Lilja writes in the Paradox forum,

“This is obviously difficult and disappointing for everyone who has put their time and enthusiasm into this project, especially when our decision comes so late.” To develop “Life by You,” Paradox enlisted former “The Sims” developer Rod Humble. Humble also served as CEO of Second Life developer Linden Lab.

“Life by You” was intended to attack EA’s charming and largely unrivaled life simulation “The Sims.” In 2019, Paradox commissioned studio Tectonic for this purpose. The game was originally scheduled to launch last September, but it was postponed multiple times – not a good sign.

The gameplay material published so far was also pessimistic: Technically the game looked outdated, the character models, animations and environments looked wooden. It would therefore have been difficult to steal players from the all-powerful “The Sims”: The latest series offshoot “The Sims 4” is already ten years old, but looks more coherent and will certainly have more content than its Paradox rival. Nevertheless, the production shutdown is bad news for fans: without serious competition, “The Sims” remains the only real alternative in the genre.
