iPhone 16: Pro models spoiled for choice

Which Pro should it be? This year the selection was harder than in a long time, as Apple (almost) makes no technical distinctions anymore. Features that were reserved for the Pro Max models in the iPhone 15 are now also available in the standard Pro smartphones in the iPhone 16. But two major differences remain.

This is the one that is visible from the outside and for which you have to open the device. The iPhone 16 Pro comes with a 6.3-inch display and the iPhone 16 Pro Max with a 6.9-inch display. Both have become even bigger (from 6.1 and 6.7 inches on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max) and have even thinner screen edges. So if you want (almost) 7 inches in an Apple smartphone, choose the iPhone 16 Pro Max, if 6.3 inches is enough, choose the more compact iPhone 16 Pro.

Internally there is difference number two: the integrated battery. Apple isn’t providing any information on the number of watt hours at the moment, but it does state technical data However, the Pro model manages a maximum of 27 hours of video playback (offline), the Pro Max up to 33 hours. It is streamed for 22 or 29 hours. Pure audio playback is a maximum of 85 (Pro) and 105 (Pro Max) hours. Apple records these values itself, so they should be treated with caution – but they give a good impression of the differences. The battery of the iPhone 16 Pro Max will probably be the largest battery Apple has ever put into a smartphone.

As already mentioned, there are no differences in all other specifications. Both devices run on the A18 Pro SoC. Even the camera configuration – which has always been a distinguishing feature between the Pro and Pro Max – is identical: both devices now have optical 5x zoom using a tetraprism process, the Pro in the 15th model only had 3x zoom. Rumors that the 16th Pro Max could have more zoom were not confirmed. Other camera specifications also match each other, with a 48 MP “Fusion” camera and 12 MP telephoto and 48 MP ultra wide angle. There is a small difference in memory configuration: the Pro is available from 128 GB, the Pro Max from 256 GB. Both devices can be expanded to a maximum of 1 TB, but expectations for 2 TB were disappointed.

Ultimately, the important argument is of the price. The iPhone 16 Pro is available for 1199 euros, the iPhone 16 Pro Max for 1449 euros. However, with the same memory, the difference is small: the iPhone 16 Pro with 256 GB costs 1,329 euros. The full configurations with 1 TByte are 1829 and 1949 euros – fortunately again less than 2000 euros. The new iPhones can be pre-ordered from Apple from next Friday and will be available in stores from September 20.
