iPhone 16: Highest average selling price ever?

The third quarter of 2024 was a good one for Apple – this was already known. However, the company has not given specific sales figures for the iPhone for a long time, nor has it given an average selling price (ASP). Market research company Counterpoint has now submitted this information. There was previously speculation that Apple Intelligence could increase sales, at least in the United States, and that Apple would usher in a new “iPhone supercycle”. In some cases, it actually appears to be working, although the most noticeable impact will probably only be felt in the fourth quarter, figures for which Apple will publish in late January. As Counterpoint has now announced, Apple managed to deliver the most iPhones ever in the third quarter – as indicated by the record sales announced by Apple. Counterpoint also sees it on iPhone. Furthermore, Apple has apparently managed to generate the highest ASP in all iPhone quarters so far. This means that an iPhone has never before been this expensive on average.

This is interesting because there was no major increase in prices. Additionally, all four iPhone 16 models support Apple Intelligence, but users are still turning to the more expensive Pro models. (The iPhone 15, which was the latest series until September 20, was supposed to be a Pro model thanks to Apple Intelligence.) To put it in perspective: the iPhone 16 Pro costs at least 1199 euros, but the iPhone 16 is “only” 949 euros. Is . The maximum price you can pay from Apple for the iPhone 16 Pro Max with the highest configuration (1 TB) is 1,949 euros. With the iPhone 14 Pro Max, Apple had already crossed the 2,000 euro mark.

According to Counterpoint, the industry achieved small growth in the overall market in the third quarter of 2024: total smartphone sales increased by two percent. Sales increased by ten percent overall, due to a higher overall ASP of seven percent – driven primarily by the iPhone. The counterpoint continues, on average, smartphones have never been sold this expensive.

The leading manufacturer in the third quarter was Samsung. Counterpoint said the global market share in sales volume was 19 percent. Apple is in second place with 17 percent, followed by Chinese companies Xiaomi (14 percent), Oppo and Vivo (both nine percent) and now Chinese Motorola (five percent). Huawei is not included in the list due to US sanctions.
