iPhone 15 and 15 Plus: Outdated after just one year

No longer recommended: Anyone who buys an iPhone 15 or 15 Plus today will have to live with the fact that they can no longer use Apple’s AI system Apple Intelligence. The reason: the devices have the Apple A16 SoC, which is no longer supported by technology and originally comes from the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max. Hope for a “Super Cycle”

Typically, Apple cell phones are provided with software updates over a long period of time. It goes on like this for five or more years. This should remain the case with the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, but the central functions will be missing. It is not expected that Apple will reduce the requirements for Apple Intelligence, as the company wants to generate a new “supercycle” for the iPhone in which more and more users buy a new device.

Apple intelligence is rolling out to the market only slowly. The service is initially only available in US English and major new features such as the much improved Siri will only be introduced next year. However, buyers today are unlikely to buy a new device unless the current technology is supported – there is a lot of interest in AI features. Will the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus stay in this range?

It will be interesting to see how Apple handles the iPhone 16 and 15 Plus when the iPhone 15 is launched in September. All these models will then be compatible with Apple Intelligence. The same applies to the “iPhone SE 4”, which is now expected to arrive next spring. Apple’s logical approach would then be to leave on the market only the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max (or one of the two), which support Apple Intelligence from the start, while making the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus cheaper or even removing them from the market.

Observers don’t expect this to happen, however. Because Apple always uses older models as new entry-level variants. In addition to the four iPhone 15 models, you can currently also buy two versions of the iPhone 14 (standard version, by the way) and the iPhone 13 (also standard). In the future, keep your eyes open when buying devices, unless you can do without Apple intelligence.
