In the latest beta version of iOS 18, Apple has integrated a feature that many users have wanted for years: continuing audio playback even while recording a video. This problem has existed for more than 15 years: in 2009, Apple introduced it iPhone 3GS For the first time the possibility of making movies from a smartphone was introduced. Since then, playing music, audio books or other audio content suddenly stops as soon as the video recording starts. This also applies Live Photoswhich also contains sound. Once the recording is finished, audio playback continues.

A switch to preserve audio
With iOS 18 there is now a new switch under the camera settings. It is simply titled “Allow audio playback”. Apple writes that automatic pausing does not occur when the switch is activated. If playback no longer occurs through headphones but through the iPhone speakers, please note that recording can only be done in mono.
In practice, the new function means that you can record sound from the iPhone speaker as well as from the environment – or you can continue to enjoy music through headphones while recording a video, as you would with photos. An old trick to do this previously was the so-called QuickTake Featurewhere videos were recorded in photo mode. However, you had to put up with filming with poor video quality. Even if you want to make a video of a walk with your iPhone while listening to music, you can’t do it.

iOS 18 makes old wishes come true
The new feature is another example of how Apple is fulfilling long-standing wishes of users with iOS 18, but one has to ask why they are only being addressed now. This applies, for example, to the new sorting options on the home screen, which for the first time allows you to have your own icon colors, including areas left blank.
Messages app now supports tapbacks with any emoji. iPadOS is available on iPad for the first time after 18 years of waiting The calculatorWhich is part of the operating system.
