iOS 18: 13 most useful little things at a glance

major new works of iOS 18 are exciting in their own right: for example, new options for setting up the home screen, a revised Control Center with multiple pages, iMessage via satellite or especially with AI support Apple Intelligence. But you shouldn’t forget the many little things Apple is working on. We’ve put together 13 points that we particularly like.

Anti-tracking Function for WiFi: Apple has tried user tracking before By capturing WiFi MAC addresses Stop. With iOS 18 there’s a new “Rotate Wi-Fi Address” function that does a better job, among other things, of sorting through random changes.

Hide apps and/or secure them using biometrics: Every app can now be set to open only after being recognized with a face or fingerprint. There is also an option to completely hide an app in an invisible folder. However, this currently only works partially with Apple apps in beta.

More controls for the flashlight: You can now fine-tune the light output from the Control Centre or the lockscreen – a significant improvement over previous levels (which were also less easy to access).

Animation at the touch of a button: Pressing both the action buttons, volume buttons, and even the sleep/wake button on the iPhone now results in an animation on the screen. This way you can see what you pressed.

Distribute WiFi: The new Password app allows sharing of protected WiFi access to other users via QR code.

End of Apple ID: As expected, Apple now calls its Central Access “Apple Account”. It should be easier to understand, especially for beginners. We don’t have the German name yet. The iCloud page has also been visually refreshed in iOS 18.

Preview then send: In the Messages app, link previews are now presented before sending an iMessage message. You can react in time if you make a mistake.

Photo collection with more overview: The Photos app can now recognise and filter invoices, images, QR codes, or handwritten content.

Beautiful Colorful Notes: In addition to allowing icons to be colored, Apple now also allows text to be colored in the Notes app. However, only certain colors are allowed.

Lockscreen icons customizable: In the future, you can configure two icons that can be found directly on the lock screen. Instead of just the camera and flashlight, you can add many other functions from the Control Center, which will soon also include third-party camera apps.

Assign better working keys: In the future, the action button on the iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max will be able to adjust any Control Center function. For example, you can use the button to activate dark mode or low-power mode.

New Game Mode for iPhone: Like the Mac, the iPhone can also be set to a state where the device is optimized for gaming. Background processes are reduced and latency is minimized. This feature is apparently activated automatically when a game is opened.

Icons are large and without labels: In addition to other home screen configuration options, icons can now be displayed slightly larger. The result is that their descriptions (labels) disappear. This makes the iPhone look cleaner.
