Instagram introduces reset button for recommendations

Instagram is testing a new reset feature for the recommendations that users see in their Feed, Reels, and Explore page. According to Meta, the new feature of the social network is specifically for teenagers. This complements existing functions for customizing the feed.

When resetting recommendations, users can also unfollow accounts that post content they no longer want to see.

It should be possible to reset with just a few clicks. Recommendations are then gradually re-personalized, with new focal points emerging based on usage behavior. This determines what content and accounts will be displayed. This function is initially available to a small number of users and will gradually be rolled out globally. Along with the reset, there’s also an option to unfollow accounts that share content you no longer want to see.

Instagram sees the function as a complement to existing features to better adapt the automatically displayed content to your interests. For example, on the Explore page, by tapping the three dots in the corner of a post, a button can be selected to mark content as interesting or not interesting. In many English-speaking countries, teens can also specify the topics they want to see more often. Using the “Hidden words” feature, posts can be filtered – those containing one of the mentioned words in the caption will be hidden. Meta also sees the return of the chronological feed from two years ago as a measure that benefited the youth.

With extensions for younger users, the Meta subsidiary is clearly trying to gain the trust of parents in particular. “We understand that parents are concerned that their teens may be viewing adult or inappropriate material online,” Said in an attached blog postInstagram claims to have strict rules about what teens can see on the apps. In addition to complete removal in the event of a violation, the network also filters content that could be problematic and does not show it in teens’ feeds, even if they follow the account.
