In future WhatsApp account can be linked to Facebook and Instagram

The Meta platform has announced that WhatsApp users will soon be able to integrate their accounts into the service provider’s so-called Account Center. This account overview already includes Facebook and Instagram, so some actions can be taken across all services at the same time. An example of meta is sharing WhatsApp status in Instagram and Facebook Stories. However, the integration is left up to the user and is disabled by default.

Meta already launched Account Center in autumn 2020 to standardize and link Facebook services and gradually rolled out this account overview worldwide. This means that services can be operated together and single sign-on can be enabled. In this way Facebook users can log in to Instagram with their account. This will also apply to WhatsApp in the future if the user decides to do so.

There’s a reason why inclusion in the Accounting Center remains optional. In October last year, the Cartel Office decided that Meta was not allowed to merge user data without asking. After years of litigation, Meta committed to reforms and stricter data protection rules. This means that the US group is not allowed to combine and process users’ personal information from different services of the platform operator, such as Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, without their consent.

Of course, Meta highlights the advantages of integrating WhatsApp into the account overview. For example, if this WhatsApp status message is automatically shared to Facebook and Instagram, the user is saved from manually posting the news on different platforms. Reactivating WhatsApp on a new device will also be easy, because after linking to the Account Center, the user can also log in to WhatsApp using Instagram or Facebook account. for the future Meta states Further functions are planned, such as uniform management of avatars and Metas AI stickers.

The data company promises that the WhatsApp account will remain separate from other services like Facebook and Instagram if the user does not integrate it into the account overview themselves. Additionally, even after linking to other Meta services, chats and phone calls through WhatsApp remain fully encrypted as before.

WhatsApp account integration with Accounts Center will be available worldwide. However, Meta says the company needs some time for the global rollout and the function may not be used everywhere immediately. Users will get the option in WhatsApp settings or when composing a new status message in other apps.
