Mobile devices can now be adorned with the “IT Security Mark” from the Federal Information Security Office (BSI). The office is expanding its logo program, which was launched in 2021, to include references to IT security promises on smartphones and tablets. The voluntary label is intended to help consumers make purchasing decisions by allowing them to see at a glance that the manufacturer promises an “appropriate” level of IT security.

Mobile IT devices store and process “a variety of relevant and sometimes personal data, such as photos, videos, text messages and contacts”, explains the BSI step. BSI President Claudia Plattner says that consumers should be able to trust the fact that their cell phone has “an appropriate level of security”. Manufacturers can now make this transparent by using the BSI label.
There are 57 license plates in circulation
Customized Technical Guidelines (TR-03180A) includes specifications for the label: Manufacturers undertake to monitor vulnerabilities, communicate them transparently, and resolve them promptly. They must protect device data through a fair rights system in which the user has control over relevant sensors and interfaces. This includes transparent display of specified access options, as well as always-visible information when the microphone, camera, or location sensors are actively used. According to the policy, pre-installed apps must communicate securely and not request unnecessary permissions.
To obtain an IT security label, a manufacturer must have one Fill up the application form and submit with additional documents. BSI does feasibility check based on documents only without going into depth. Till now BSI 57 such people were awardedOf those, 34 are for broadband routers, 18 for email services and three for video conferencing systems. There is currently only one allocation in the “smart consumer appliances” category, which was introduced in 2022.
