Figma: Screen designers and developers should work closely together

Figma, the developer of the program, announced a tool for AI-generated designs at its annual Config conference. Websites and graphical user interfaces are created with Figma. The software primarily runs as a web app, but is also available for Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS. This puts the program in direct competition with Adobe XD. An originally planned acquisition by Adobe fell through in late 2023.

According to the creator, two thirds of Figma users are not designers. With the development tool, screen designers and software developers will in the future work together to transform layouts into code. Dev Mode aims to reduce the back-and-forth between design teams and programmers.

Figma, for example, displays rich text details such as font size and tracking as code. The program code of the contents of frames in the layout can be called up and compared. The program associates variables, component properties, and documentation with graphical objects on the workspace.

So that design teams and programmers can work together more closely in the future, Figma displays the code of individual components.

In the future, users will be able to use AI tools to instantly create design drafts in different styles and layouts to visualize their ideas. Layouts can be supplemented or made more precise with functions to rewrite, edit and replace text and images.

Artificial intelligence should also be able to turn static designs into working prototypes and add and translate text. You can use the visual search function to find designs using screenshots or images.

With Figma Slides, designers can create and present interactive presentations together as a team. Figma designs and prototypes can be imported without loss of detail. If design mode is activated, you can also use Figma’s design tools in Slides.

Team members can share presentations using comments, chat, and audio messages, as well as an organized grid view.

An updated user interface shows alternative labels in the properties panel. Workspaces can be adjusted using scalable palettes. They can also be minimized to give more space to design. A new toolbar shows functions such as the recently added AI tools at the bottom of the workspace.

The creator intends to introduce AI tools, Figma slides, and a redesigned user interface as part of a limited beta version initially. Users can register via a waitlist.

Figma is available as a free basic version. Team Library, Version History and Der Mode are added for 12 euros per month. The 45 euros and 75 euros per month versions are complementary tools for larger organizations such as company-wide libraries and dedicated workspaces.
