In the so-called time use survey (ZVE) in 2022, the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) found that children and young people spend one hour and seven minutes a day gaming in front of a screen. There were clear differences between the sexes.

Children and young people aged 10 to 17 were relevant for the survey. It says, “Boys are more likely to play video and computer games than girls: at 1 hour and 46 minutes, they spend four times more time per day playing video and computer games than girls (26 minutes).” The federal office said in a statement Out of.

As you get older, you play less
According to the Destatis survey, the 18 to 29 year old age group, i.e. young adults, spend only 38 minutes a day playing screen games. People aged 30 to 44 play games for only 18 minutes a day, while people aged 45 to 64 play for only eight minutes. The 65+ generation spends only six minutes a day playing video games.
The Federal Statistical Office states that the time use survey only takes place every ten years on a voluntary basis. On three specified days, participating household members aged ten and over recorded their time use in a time diary or an app, two of which were weekdays and one day was on a weekend. In total, 20,000 people aged ten and over in approximately 10,000 households participated in ZVE 2022.
Bitkom’s results in 2022 were quite different. On average, nine out of ten children in their survey played video games for two hours and 29 minutes a day – although they played much longer on weekends. There was only a half-hour difference between boys and girls. However, Bitkom surveyed 10 to 18-year-olds, which may have produced some different results.
