E-bike in test i:SY E5 ZR F

i:SY E5 ZR F is a compact e-bike with Bosch motor that cleverly combines performance, compactness and comfort. We tested the versatile e-bike.

i:SY is a German manufacturer of high-quality compact e-bikes with a high recognition value. The models are similar in terms of their frames with low entry and basic components. The differences are mainly found in the engine, gearshift and drive. With the i:SY E5 ZR F, we’re testing a model with a Bosch Performance Line motor, 5-speed hub gears, and a Gates belt drive.

At first glance, the i:SY E5 ZR F looks almost like a folding e-bike with its 20-inch wheels – but it’s not. Instead, it is a completely compact bike that also meets demanding requirements thanks to well-thought-out equipment with Bosch drive and belt drive. We tested what the versatile e-bike can do.

Structure, optics and workmanship

i:SY E5 ZR F comes fully assembled in a big box and is ready to drive straight away. Practical: Thanks to the Speedlifter twist stem, the handlebar can be turned sideways up to 90 degrees, even without tools. This saves space during transportation and storage. To be safe, you should tighten all screws and check the tire pressure before your first ride. Of course, a suitable helmet is also included. Here we show the best smart bicycle helmets.

The attractive N-shaped frame of the 23.9 kg i:SY E5 ZR F ensures high recognition value. Entry height is 47 cm. A sturdy luggage rack is already installed. The integrated Abus frame lock, which locks the bike and battery at the same time, is well thought out.

Handlebar and Display

The wide, ergonomic handlebar can be adjusted in height with just one hand thanks to the speed lifter. The Ergon’s wide and comfortable handles provide a good grip even on long trips. The bell is easily accessible under the left handle.

On the left are the controls for the Bosch Intuvia display. Here the driver selects the support level and views information like speed, range and battery level. The large color display in the center can be read even in sunlight and can be removed with one hand.

On the right, the 5-speed SHIMANO hub gear is integrated into the handle as a twist grip. The circuit works precisely and can be operated easily even with wet hands.

lights and brakes

i:SY’s lighting system turns on automatically at dusk and provides a bright 100 lux front headlight with high beam function. The button for this is located separately on the right side of the handlebar. The taillights are bright too, it’s a shame there’s no brake light.

Tektro’s hydraulic disc brakes with 4-piston callipers at the front and 2-piston callipers at the rear ensure safe deceleration. The brakes can be applied fully and operated boldly when needed.

To drive

Thanks to the height-adjustable handlebar and saddle, you can quickly find a comfortable sitting position on the i:SY. The wide saddle is pleasantly soft padded. The paddle has an anti-slip coating and can be folded. They give the impression that they can handle a lot.

The 5-speed hub provides a low enough gear ratio for starting as well as a high enough gear ratio at speeds of 25 km/h and above. Most cheap e-bikes with small wheels can’t do this.

20-inch wheels transmit bumps directly to the bike and rider compared to larger wheels. i:SY is ideally equipped for urban environments with paved roads and asphalt. For example, for frequent trips on dirt roads, we recommend an e-bike with larger wheels and suspension.

The heart of the i:SY E5 ZR F is the Bosch Performance Line motor with 75 Nm of torque, providing drivers with powerful support up to 25 km/h. Thanks to the high-quality torque sensor, the motor responds sensitively to pedal pressure and operates quietly and with little vibration. Even in the Eco setting, it pushes gently but noticeably without being intrusive. Many affordable e-bike motors could learn a lesson here. The motor can accelerate even heavy drivers up to 150 kg. A related app documents the trip. Belt drive transfers mid-engine power quietly to the rear wheels and requires low maintenance.

Battery

With a capacity of 545 Wh, the i:SY’s Bosch PowerPack battery is pleasantly large. Depending on driving style and support mode, a range of up to 55 km is realistic. To charge you can remove the battery or charge it directly on the e-bike. Thanks to the integrated ABS lock, the battery is secured to the frame to prevent theft.

price

i:SY E5 ZR F has arrived 4049 euros Available. In return, you get a high-quality and well-thought-out compact e-bike with a first-class Bosch drive and useful features. If your requirements are low and you are looking for a compact e-bike with belt drive, brake light and indicator, you will find an inexpensive option in the Engwe P20 (test report).

conclusion

i:SY E5 ZR F is a compact e-bike that leaves nothing to be desired in terms of performance, comfort and features. The powerful Bosch motor, low-maintenance belt drive, good brakes, high ergonomics and well-thought-out details like the rotating handlebar and integrated lock make the 20-inch bike a great companion for the city. If we often ride off-road we would prefer an e-bike with larger wheels and suspension only. We also miss the brake lights. Otherwise, the i:SY E5 ZR F impresses as a versatile compact e-bike with Bosch power.
