Disney+ is taking action against account sharing: an additional member costs 6 euros

Disney+ wants to take action against so-called account sharing, in which several people from different households share the same subscription. Like its competitor Netflix, Disney offers its customers the opportunity to add an additional member to their subscription. Prices have now been set: an additional member costs 5 or 6 euros per month, depending on the subscription.

Like Netflix, additional members are people who are allowed to use the Disney+ subscription, even if they live outside of the main household. In most cases, this is cheaper than subscribing on your own. The price of an additional member is based on the subscription taken.

Anyone who subscribes to Disney+ Standard with ads can add an additional member for 5 euros per month. With Disney+ Standard and Disney+ Premium subscriptions, an additional member costs 6 euros per month. Additional members can watch the entire catalog on Disney+ in the quality offered by the main subscription.

However, only one additional subscription can be taken per subscription. This makes Disney+ a little more restrictive than Netflix, where you can add up to two members to the higher subscription levels. In terms of price, the differences are small: with Netflix, additional members cost 4 or 5 euros, but there are a few more restrictions than with Disney+ – for example, with Netflix, additional members cannot watch the entire catalog.

But even on Disney+, additional subscribers are not completely free from restrictions. An additional subscriber can only open one account and watch on only one device at the same time. According to a Disney Blog Post Additional members are now active “in Europe” – this feature can already be used in Germany. You can invite an additional member via “Profile” and “Account”.

The introduction of additional members does not mean that Disney is no longer actively enforcing its account sharing rules. Over the past few months, Disney has repeatedly given new dates for when account sharing should end. Disney last talked about September.

Either way, subscribers who share their accounts with people outside their household can expect imminent restrictions. Like Netflix, Disney will likely analyze IP addresses to sooner or later block people who only stream in locations outside of the main household.
