Modern mirrorless system cameras give photographers many options to customize the device to their needs. These include personalized menus and programmable buttons, among other things. However, many functions can be overwhelming and confusing at first. in C’T Photography Issue 05/2024 Sandra Petrowitz explains in a practical way how you can adapt your camera to your photo situations.

Customized camera settings
Optimized access improves workflow and reduces the time spent searching through the overall menu. It also means that the photographer is less likely to miss moments that could have led to a great photo.
How to customize the quick access options varies between brands and models, but is generally designed to be user-friendly. However, configuration requires time and patience.
In addition to individual functions and parameters with easy access, user profiles are also possible. A set of settings is saved for a specific photographic purpose. As a reward for the effort, the user can switch between two different camera configurations by turning the mode dial. In a program, images are created first inside and then immediately outside with just one touch of the camera.

Quick Menu and My Menu
In current system cameras, the quick menus provide direct access to up to 20 functions. The manufacturer’s default settings are rarely right for the individual photographer. Many cameras allow functions to be stored here that cannot be found using buttons on the camera body.
The My Menu includes classic menu functions, such as quick access to interval recording. Each photographer can save their personal “best”. Depending on the camera, this is also possible subjectively. However, you should make sure that there are not too many functions, otherwise it will soon become confusing.
Function keys and user profiles
Function buttons on cameras and lenses can be used for specific settings or modes. This is especially useful for parameters that are changed frequently and must be quickly accessed. How many such buttons there are depends on the model, the same applies to the parameters with which you can specify them.
user profile
The highest discipline is the application-related user profile. Safari, macro and portrait require different values, as do different lighting conditions in the same genre. With three options that can be quickly set using the mode wheel, you can quickly switch between different photo motifs using user profiles.
