Community Notes: YouTube gets fact checks too

YouTube is starting to test a “Community Notes” feature that allows users to correct misinformation on the video platform. Screenshots on social media show that invitations are currently being sent to selected users.

YouTube announced the fact-checking feature in June: it allows users to agree on information under videos that clarifies false or misleading information from the video or simply adds additional details. “For example, this could include clues that clarify when a song is intended as a parody, when a new version of a reviewed product is available, or when old footage is misrepresented as a current event,” YouTube writes in its announcement,

What will happen next with the short messaging service is currently unclear.

To be selected for the test, you need your own YouTube channel, which so far follows the community guidelines in an exemplary manner. Users invited to the test can then write notes for the videos that are to be evaluated by independent reviewers during the testing phase.

The purpose, YouTube writes, is to train the system – community notes should later be able to be evaluated by other users. In addition to these votes, YouTube also wants to involve the algorithm in the decision about which community notes will eventually appear under the video.

The screenshot shows that community notes on YouTube can refer to specific points in the video. Accordingly, the list of community additions can be quite long compared to the typically short posts on X.
