Apart from headsets, the standard option for recording spatial video for Vision Pro for private individuals is the iPhone: the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max models as well as all current 16 series iPhones support it. Now there’s another option for creating spatial experiences with mixed reality glasses: an EOS R7 from Canon with a matching double-eye lens. It was announced earlier in the summer, but it is going on sale now.

Get closer to 3D subject
The hardware is named a bit cumbersome RF-S7.8mm F4 STM Dual And it is scheduled to ship from mid-November, as can be seen from the Canon website and photo dealer pages in Germany, which already allow pre-orders. “Tell your story with 3D depth, capture life’s adventures, daily explorations and exciting portraits with this new stereoscopic lens,” the Japanese photography company says in the ad.
The field of view is 60 degrees “to be able to produce images similar to human vision.” The on-sensor layout corresponds to RF-S 3.9mm F3.5 Dual Fisheye (144 degree field of view). The left and right lenses must be focused at the same time, autofocus works from a distance of 0.15 meters with a maximum magnification of 0.07x, which should also be able to capture detailed 3D subjects.

As mentioned, Canon’s spatial video lenses require a EOS R7 (from €1299)Which is an APS-C model. Its price as a body is around 1300 euros. The RF-S7.8mm F4 STM DUAL is available for pre-order in the USA for just under 450 euros (tax and shipping plus), while German dealers charge 549 euros.
