Coming late: Apple Intelligence coming to iPhones in Germany in April 2025

Apple has presented a more concrete roadmap for Apple Intelligence in the EU: In Germany and other EU member states, Apple will activate AI functions on iPhones and iPads in April 2025, the company announced on Monday.

Apple has promised features like “writing tools, Genmoji, a redesigned Siri with better language understanding, integration of ChatGPT” for the EU launch. It may be a long time before more profound innovations come to Siri. The introduction of AI tasks in the EU should also be gradual.

Apparently, significantly expanded language support is also planned at the same time, including German, French and Italian. These innovations are probably part of iOS 18.4 and macOS 15.4. For now, Apple Intelligence and the new Siri are using English as the system language.

Apple is “looking for a way to deliver as many new features as possible in the EU, in accordance with the DMA and respecting data protection and security,” the company said. We are pleased that “EU iPhone and iPad customers will have access to many of the most important features of Apple Intelligence.” Apple had originally postponed the introduction, citing “regulatory uncertainties” due to new EU rules for gatekeepers (Digital Markets Act – DMA). However, what exactly changed is unclear. Support for German in Apple Intelligence apparently wasn’t scheduled for 2024 anyway.

With Apple Intelligence, the group is complementing its operating system with larger AI models. The first functions will be available starting Monday with iOS 18.1 and macOS 15.1, with more functions available in December with iOS 18.2 and macOS 15.2 and beyond.

The language models run partly locally on the device and partly in the new Apple cloud. Here the company specifically promises to work data-efficiently and not to save or reuse user requests. Security researchers have had the option since late last weekTo discover security gaps in Apple’s “private cloud compute” in a virtual environment.
