The word “boudoir” comes from French and once referred to the private retreats of aristocratic women. Boudoir photography follows on from this and usually uses a similar and protected environment. Instead of a uniform studio environment, as is often used for nude photographs, furniture such as beds and armchairs are also used as props for boudoir photographs. The focus of the images is not specifically on the body, but on the sensual representation of the woman herself.

It is much more difficult to convey real emotion when taking photographs than to focus on individual physical aspects. The biggest hurdle is building a relationship of trust with every woman who dares to appear in front of the camera. There are many reasons why people – mainly women – take this step. While some people want their photos as gifts for their partner, for many women, boudoir photos are about discovering and showing a new side of themselves.

Boudoir photos don’t work at the press of a button. Nadine Visser slowly approaches the models with her camera, starting with portrait shots to break the ice, for example. Because if there’s one thing you can instantly recognize in pictures, it’s that the person depicted is feeling comfortable or uncomfortable.

In an interview, Nadine Visser explains how her boudoir photographs inspire not only men, but above all women.
