Traces of humanity: Bernhard Lang documents them from the air. His photographic focus is on the changes that humans leave on the Earth. He explores both the deep scars in nature and the remarkable projects that give hope.

Photography is not a podcast
With us, photographers tell you what it’s really like: life with the camera at the ready. New every other Sunday.

As an aerial photographer, Bernhard Lang has uncovered a perspective rarely seen on Earth.

A striking example of this are the vast greenhouse fields in southern Spain. This plastic landscape may look impressive from the ground, but from the air its full extent is revealed: the polytunnels stretch for several kilometres and have to be replaced regularly. That means mountains of plastic waste. Much of it then ends up in the ocean, with disastrous consequences for the environment.
For his photo project, the photographer needs, in addition to researching the subject, also sophisticated planning for local transportation options. Choosing the right plane or helicopter depends on the subject. A sports plane is suitable for slow, precise flight. A helicopter is more suitable for still photography. But no matter which plane he chooses, Lang relies entirely on the pilot and follows his instructions.
But what is one’s creative scope in the air? And what does it feel like to take photos in depth while standing on the slippery side of a helicopter with a medium format camera in the wind and cold? Bernhard Lang believes that you should be free from dizziness and talks about his experiences as an aerial photographer.
