“Cities Skylines 2”: Console release canceled for now

“Cities Skylines 2” will not come to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S in October as originally planned. The Colossal Order development team announced this on the official forum. The developers cannot give a new release date at the moment, but development continues.

“Unfortunately, we have not yet achieved the stability and performance goals we set for the console version,” writes Colossal Order in a forum post.Although the studio is making steady progress, the current version still suffers from unspecified problems.

A new release candidate is scheduled to be tested in August. Colossal Order will then decide whether to consider a new release date. However, if this release candidate also has problems, development may be delayed even further.

It is not known what is wrong with the console port of the city simulation. On the one hand, translating the control scheme from mouse and keyboard to a gamepad can be a challenge. On the other hand, “Cities Skylines 2” still runs poorly even on current high-end processors in PCs – so the console port may also fail due to performance problems.

This is not the first time that Colossal Order has had to postpone the release of the console version. The Xbox Series and PS5 version were originally scheduled to release at the same time as the PC version before being postponed to spring 2024. That date changed to autumn – and now there is no date at all. Although Colossal Order says it is still working on the port, the future of the console version seems very uncertain.

“Cities Skylines 2” hit the market in autumn 2023 in a poor state. The studio, which had the surprise hit “Cities Skylines”, wasted a lot of goodwill in the community. Users are still reporting technical problems. On Steam, only half of users recommend buying “Cities Skylines 2”. Meanwhile, Colossal Order is continuing to work on speeding up the PC version.
