In the normal state, when the shortest possible focal length is selected, the lens is 76.5 × 92.2 millimeters. The optical structure consists of 15 lenses in twelve groups, including four special lenses for error correction and high imaging performance. The closest focusing distance is 27 cm when a focal length of 28 millimeters is used. The image scale reaches a ratio of 1:9.6. The nine aperture blades are intended to ensure pleasant blurring.

The lens is sealed against water and dust splashes, which Canon describes as “weather resistant”. In addition to the zoom ring, there is a lens control/focus ring on the lens that can be assigned various functions.

The zoom is also equipped with optical image stabilization, which compensates up to 5.5 exposure levels. For use in the video sector, Canon advertises effectively suppressed focus breathing when used on compatible cameras. The stepper focus motor should also work almost silently.
