Brompton’s folding bikes are getting bigger wheels. While compact folding bikes previously ran on 16-inch tyres, Brompton is now offering the new G Line 20-inch tyres. This is aimed at making the riding experience similar to that of a normal-sized bike. The Brompton Electric G Line and non-motorised versions will be available to buy from October.
After fifty years of 16-inch wheels, Brompton is now offering larger tyres for the first time. This means that the folding bike, which retains the tried and tested folding system, can travel better on slippery roads. When it comes to tyres, Brompton gives you the choice between Schwalbe tyres that are suitable for off-road use and can also be used tubeless, and Continental tyres that conform to the road surface. In addition to the new wheel size, there has also been a change with the brakes: the new Bromptons are the first to feature hydraulic disc brakes.
The Brompton also has a 345 Wh battery located in a bag that’s attached to the frame above the front wheel. The engine has moved from the front to the rear wheel, which should improve handling and balance compared to its predecessor. Rated continuous power is 250 watts. Brompton claims to have improved the efficiency of the motor by 20 percent and promises a range of 30 to 60 kilometers with a full battery charge. The Brompton Electric G Line communicates to your smartphone via Bluetooth, and the manufacturer provides updates via an app.
The electric G Line weighs 16.1kg without battery and 19.5kg with battery. The non-motorized version weighs 13.9kg without mudguards and luggage rack; with both it’s 900g more. The non-motorized G Line has an eight-speed derailleur, the electric G Line has to make do with four gears.

The Brompton G line will launch in October
The Brompton Electric G Line costs 3,499 euros and is therefore not much more expensive than its electric counterpart with smaller tyres, the Electric C Line. Prices for the G Line without a motor range between 2,849 and 3,079 euros depending on equipment – mudguards, lights and luggage racks are optional. Brompton offers three frame sizes to accommodate people between 1.52 and 1.98 metres tall. Sales of the new models will begin on October 7 and the available colours are green, orange and white.
