Apple Watch Series 10: Water functions remain improved in Ultra 2

This year, Apple is getting confused with its changed Apple Watch lineup: The Ultra 2 was only given a new color variant, which was actually expected for last year, while the Series 10, as a “normal watch”, gets some functions that the Ultra 2 is now missing, including a wide-angle OLED display for better readability. In other areas, too, the standard watch now seems to be on par with the Ultra – at least at first glance. However, on closer inspection, the Ultra 2 is still ahead. A good example of this are the new tracking functions for water sports.

The Series 10 can measure water depth and water temperature for the first time. However, while the Ultra 2 can be worn up to 100 meters (even for diving), the Series 10 can only be worn up to a maximum of 50 meters. The Series 10’s depth sensor is only sufficient for snorkeling up to a maximum of 6 meters, while the Ultra 2 can display up to 40 meters. “Recreational scuba”, i.e. sport diving, is now possible, Apple writes. “High-speed water sports” are also only allowed with the Ultra 2.

Still, Apple is trying to position the Series 10 more strongly for sea and pool fans. This is how the popular diving and snorkeling app becomes Oceanic Plus Also optimized for Series 10 – with the company’s advance assistance, of course. The Tidal app Tides is also brand new for surfers. “Users can get seven days of continuous tidal forecasts for beaches and surf locations around the world, including information about high and low tide, ebb and flow, tidal height and direction, and sunrise and sunset, all presented on a timeline”, writes the company. In addition, nearby beaches are displayed on a map and there are corresponding complications with current tide and temperature information.

Apple has also made changes to the types of training. With watchOS 11, which will be released next week, there will be configurable workouts for pool swimming. The new depth measurement app for the Series 10 can be activated automatically if desired. The wide-angle OLED should help when reading the watch; its brightness should increase by up to 40 percent when viewed from the side.

However, there are still differences in the Ultra 2 display. The latter can achieve a maximum brightness of 3000 candela, while the Series 10 (still respectable) has a 2000 candela “peak brightness”. When it comes to resolution, both are almost equal. The Series 10 display can now show one more line. The Series 10 and Ultra 2 are in new darker colors Already available for pre-order And will go on sale on September 20.
