As part of Apple’s new AI functions for iPhone, iPad and Mac, there were apparently also talks with Facebook’s parent company Meta. As financial news agency Bloomberg reported on Monday evening, the initiative reportedly came from Meta itself. After closely considering the idea, Apple decided against it – for data protection reasons,

The idea was to use the meta-chatbot Llama as part of Apple Intelligence. This was last discussed in March. It is now clear that Apple provides its own LLM and image generators for its AI services, as well as ChatGPT from OpenAI on request. However, Apple continues to negotiate with other partners, including Google’s Gemini and AI companies in China.
According to Bloomberg, negotiations with Meta have not reached a “formal stage.” Apple currently has “no active plans” to integrate Llama or other meta-AI technology. Apple made this decision because the company did not consider Meta’s privacy protection practices to be “strict enough.” Neither Meta nor Apple wished to comment on Bloomberg’s report.

Apple is open to external partners
However, in principle, Apple should remain open to AI partners – also because internally it is believed that there is a lack of a strong chatbot competitor to ChatGPT. It is conceivable that Apple will continue to keep its platform open, which would be very pleasing to the EU Commission among others, which is currently pursuing a massive action against the iPhone company.
In addition to the Chinese partners and Google’s Gemini, it is also conceivable that Microsoft’s Bing Chat or Copilot products will become part of iOS and Co. However, nothing is known about the respective negotiations. The deal with OpenAI is reportedly not linked to the exchange of financial resources – ChatGPT will reportedly be integrated into Apple Intelligence by both parties for free. This gives Apple access to what software boss Craig Federighi says is currently the best chatbot, while OpenAI wants access to more than a billion iPhone users.
