Apple Intelligence: Still waiting for the first test

Waiting for the biggest new feature in iOS 18: Apple’s AI system Apple Intelligence is indeed due to be released in the autumn, but so far no one has been able to try out the generator functions. The technology has still not been activated as part of the developer beta, which is now in its third version. This means that Apple Intelligence is not available to anyone outside Cupertino. At least now there are new indications that this could change soon.

Developer Matthew Rodarmel found several references to Apple Intelligence in the Xcode simulator of the third iOS 18 developer preview. You can use the simulator to test apps on a Mac. Apple maintains accordingly A new menu prominently featured in System Settings. It’s called “Apple Intelligence and Siri”, it’s marked with the well-known icon and has the beta label – Apple already suggested it. The familiar Siri settings can now be found here, including language, voice and your own information.

The way Siri should respond has also been changed, as has the option to delete Siri and Dictation history, and a menu for the ability to interact with Siri in a chatbot-like way (“Messaging with Siri”, which is now also possible) has also been integrated. Below that are settings for app suggestions and notifications – nothing new, really. Apple Intelligence still can’t be turned on in the simulator, and the new Siri animation, in which the whole edge of the screen turns colourful, hasn’t been implemented yet.

Apple had announced that Apple Intelligence would be tested this summer. However, it was not announced when the time would come or who would be among the testers. In fact it would be assumed that Apple Intelligence could initially only be tested by a small group of developers. However, the rollout of the first public beta of iOS 18 is very close at the moment. Apple could also use another method: the waiting list.

The first information about it was available only in June – in the form of currently unused strings in the operating system. Apple Intelligence will be available this year only in US English; among iPhones, only the 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max (and later the 16) can use it. In addition, a new, smarter Siri may not appear until next year. In the EU, another problem is Apple’s stance on the Digital Market Act – the company fears that it will fall under the regulation and therefore wants to postpone its introduction. Initially, Apple Intelligence should be able to at least summarize text, generate emojis and images (albeit in a stylized and unrealistic form), and better sort notifications and emails. Later, more intelligent Siri will be added, including app control (and more).
